Huck Finn ch 6-15

The story really gets interesting during these chapters. The biggest examples of betrayal are developed even further. I think we can all agree that we hate Pap. What more is there to betrayal than beating your son and using him for his money? Well, we happened to find out in chapter 6. Pap has certainly outdone himself when he locks Pap up in a shack by the river. On the bright side, a friendship begins to blossom when Huck runs away to Jackson island. Jim, Miss Watson's slave ran off too, so I guess friends that run away together stay together. It's actually very fascinating to see how Twain described the moments between Huck and Jim because this pair was not a common thing back in the day. There were no other significant signs of friendship other than theirs. They really kicked Tom Sawyer to the curb, don't you think? There is also betrayal in a sense that both Huck and Jim ran away from Widow Douglas and Miss Watson but I don't really see it as betrayal.

  1. April, try to get into more depth with your blogs. You are merely skimming the surface and I would like you to analyze the text deeper - even if it is just one small scene from the reading.

  2. Honestly speaking I don't hate Pap like you might. Yes I see his faults and the betrayal of using his son but I have a soft spot for him in a sense. I don't know why but I think down the line we are going to learn more of why Pap does what he does and why he is the way he is, It seems like the one person that should hate him doesn't even hate him. Why do you think Huck doesn't hate his father. If you remember when his father locked him up he said he was enjoying it there and didn't really want to go back. Why do you think Huck doesn't want to either stay with his dad or the widow?

  3. April I agree with you when you said that Pap betrays Huck. I as well don't think its right for him to treat Huck the way he does. I do believe that Huck and Jim betrayed Widow Douglas and Miss Watson because they ran away from them. Cherwood to answer your question, I think Huck doesn't want to stay with the widow because he has no freedom and he can't be himself with her. Huck doesn't want to stay with his dad because his dad doesn't care about him and abuses him to much.
